Luluzulu

2016-06-20

G/E

The married couple Katie (36) and Richard (42) Kendrick founded their own label LULUZULU in 2014. First I had to read the brand name a couple of times but it’s a unique name with a big recognition value. They design collections for kids aged 2-9 years. Comfortable, easy-going mixed in with a martitime touch. Meet a very funny and lovely couple – as I got to know them!

Who are the brains behind Luluzulu?  Where are you from?

We are that well known cliche ‘the husband and wife team’. Based in Scotland, Richard’s English and I’m Scottish (there’s a big distinction) so it’s probably appropriate that we live in the borders, in Scotland but beside England. We met in Paris where Richard had a digital design agency but moved to Glasgow where I was studying Law.

We work together using a studio space in our house, so work normally is a bit of a juggling act with family life but having a children’s input is fantastic. We are forever asking the kids to try on our samples etc poor things.

Are you parents?

We have two girls Lulu 7 and Hattie 4, they are very different  to one another. Lulu loves superheroes, climbing trees and collecting worms whilst Hattie would prefer to wear pink tutus, spreading fairy dust whilst riding a pink unicorn. My father says you role the dice each time you have a child, meaning each child is unique. I think he was right.

Was ist Eure Inspiration?

What is your current collection about? What are the thems, your inspirations?

The inspiration for the current collection derives from our own coastal roots, playing with fresh colour and stripes mixed in with the fascinating Japanese traditions of fish printing – ‘Gyotaku’. We chose to make a great British fabric the core of our collection. The beautiful loopback cotton is both soft and bold at the same time, the fabric can be relaxed or more formal bridging the gap between loungewear for the beach and something a bit more formal and stylish. Ideal for alfresco evenings. The majority of the collection is unisex, with the exception of a dress and skirt this season. We have kept the relaxed slouchy style of the pants and dungarees and introduced our “naughtyical” stripe. The relaxed soft twisted T-shirts use our own original gyotaku1 prints and the tent dress is perfect to spin and twirl away the summer.

Gyotaku (Japanese from gyo „fish“ + taku „rubbing“) is the traditional Japanese method of printing fish, a practice which dates back to the mid-1800s and used by fishermen to record their catches.

Of which kind of items is your collection made of and for which ages?

We like everything a bit slouchy, comfortable with clean lines and a twist. We tend to oversize slightly. he clothing is designed to be rolled up and played around with.

The collection is made up of T shirts, long sleeves, shorts, slouch pants and dungarees. We have also added skirts and a stunning tent dress ideal for spinning around in, plus some gorgeous matching bandanas ideal for keeping the sun off.

How you came up with idea of the name?

We named our eldest daughter Lulu which confused Richard’s mother she thought we had called her Zulu, each time we corrected her  “Lulu“ she  replied “Zulu” . This went back and forth, ”Lulu”  “Zulu” louder and louder „LULU…ZULU“ until we decided LULUZULU sounded great (but we weren’t going to call our kid that!)

What about A/W16? May you tell us some little secrets already?

The collection is centred around the idea of a „duvet day”. A day spent relaxing at home, away from the outside world left alone with our imagination. A variety of characters influenced by puppetry, shadows and Chinese symbols inspire the children to create their own unique story.
